  2. Dear Sachiko-san,

I understand that you and your fellow students are trying to improve your English, so I will respond to your comments in English. Yes, I currently teach classical literary Tibetan language. In American universities, we make a distinction between "classical Tibetan" (which is the literary style of Buddhist texts written up until 1959) and "modern Tibetan" (which reflects the influence of Chinese and Hindi on the contemporary written Tibetan language inside Chinese-occupied Tibet and in the exile communities of India and Nepal, respectively). Thank you for your encouragement of me in my studies. There is a wealth of excellent scholarship on Tibet written by Japanese scholars that I hope to be able to read someday. Likewise, I encourage you to continue your study of English, and someday return to New York. It is a wonderful city that I enjoy quite a lot, and I hope you will have the opportunity to do so as well someday.
